Opinion: Marco Asensio is the future of Real Madrid Marco Asensio A belter of a left foot goals from all around the pitch and a touch of elegance are only some of the attributes that make you fall in love with Marco Asensio the number 20 of arguably the biggest club in the world Real Madrid. Believe it or not a talent and prospect such as Asensio was bought to the Santiago Bernabeu for a measly 3.9 million from Mallorca. However he almost never made it as a footballer because of growth deficiencies in his knees during his youth which caused him problems until he was a teenager. Now the Spaniard is a key figure in the Real Madrid line-up predominantly featuring in and around the left wing/forward position left vacant by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. The 22 year old has come a long way from scoring that wonder goal in his senior debut for Real Madrid against Sevilla in the Super Cup win. Today he is as important to manager Julen Lopetegui as any other Real Madrid player. Features predominantly in Lopeteguis plans The skillful playmaker will not be one who will score 40 goals a season as Ronaldo did but will create a lot as compared to the Portuguese sensation as evidenced by his stats this season. 3 assists in 4 league appearances which included 2 penalties won for his team and an average of 1.3 key passes every game show his involvement up the pitch. Nevertheless he has some serious competition for a regular spot in the starting line-up for Los Blancos as they have the golden boy Isco in their ranks as well. Isco is the key creator on the pitch for the Spanish giants and has been doing just that since his arrival from Malaga. But with Lopetegui favouring a 4-3-3 formation and Asensio fitting into the system much better than Isco the creative forward will certainly get the nod as a regular within the managers tenure for sure. Sweet left foot Asensio is contracted to Real Madrid till 2023 and if any club is interested in pricing the prodigy away from the Bernabeu they will have to pay some serious cash. It has been reported that Asensio was handed the vacant number 7 by club president Perez but refused the jersey which would bring a lot of pressure to fill the boots of Cristiano Ronaldo. However there is no doubting his talent and even if he never reaches the extraordinary level of Messi and Ronaldo he will surely in a couple of years be one of the best footballers in the world. Harry Kane receives praise from Spain as Spurs striker sets sights on Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi Spain manager Julen Lopetegui told Gareth Southgate how fortunate England were to have Harry Kane up front as the Tottenham striker now targets the goal records of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The revelation made by Southgate at his press conference at Tottenhams training base on Sunday afternoon shows just what high regard Kane is held in all over Europe. The Spurs striker has won the Premier League golden boot for the last two seasons and can claim alongside Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata to be one of the best centre-forwards in Europe. So much so that Lopetegui who has Morata as his first choice for the Spain national team told Southgate recently he would love to have Kane up front. I was having some interaction with Julen Lopetegui at a game where he was commenting on how lucky I was to have Harry playing Southgate said. Kane may have started the season slowly for Tottenham but Southgate talked up his form now that he has three goals in his last five games. He has 10 goals in 20 caps for England now and Southgate said that he was targeting becoming one of the best players in the world and reaching the level of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He's in top form but he's also got the mentality to want to be the best Southgate said. He knew this morning how many goals in games he had and also how many Ronaldo and Messi had at this point. He is driven to be one of the world's best. Why can't that happen moving forward? Kane turned 24 in late July and already has 125 career goals for club and country. At the same age Ronaldo had 137 but Messi had 203. Southgate has been working with Kane for four years giving him his England Under-21 debut back in October 2013 and then taking him to the European Under-21 Championship in June 2015. He is confident Kane will continue to flourish under pressure just as he has been doing for Tottenham for the last three seasons. I have every trust in Harry Southgate said. I've worked with him long enough from the Under-21s through and he'll deliver whatever the occasion. He relishes the occasions. You've got to have that drive and belief and that's what he's got. He had that when we weren't picking him in the Under-21s. He'd come and say: 'Hold on a minute why? What's the rationale?' I never minded that self-belief. He's doing that for Spurs and now in the biggest matches. The fact that Kane is so good and has only just turned 24 gave Southgate even more faith that he will get even better. We're still talking about a 24-year-old so there's still much more to come from him he said. Alan [Shearer] was 25 when he was top scorer in Euro 96. Harry is still in the early stages of his career. And yet despite Kanes brilliance and the fact that Spain would love to have him Southgate admitted that England could not dream of comparing themselves with Lopeteguis side. On Saturday evening Spain thumped Italy 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier at the Bernabeu showing a level of performance beyond anything England could hope to produce. How could we possibly compare ourselves to a team who have Champions League winners throughout and who have a World Cup and European Championships under their belt Southgate said. We are a work in progress. We have some players like Phil [Jones] who have won trophies but a lot who have won none. We have nowhere near the number of caps. But we have some exciting young players who can be really good going forward but will have to go through some of the hardships those Spaniards went through to get where they are. Real Madrid and Barca in the last four of the Champions League every year. None of our clubs have appeared in the last four of the Champions League for a long long time. So the big international experience is coming from club football as well.

I answered thatthe other day Lopetegui told reporters when asked about Modrics future. The president spoke resoundingly and we do not have the slightest doubt that he [Modric] will continue to be happy playing with us. Article continues below There is nothing new. If I have spoken with Modric I speak with my players when I decide to but its private. Soccer World Cup 2018: Spain defending not the way forward admits Fernando Hierro in error-strewn campaign - La Roja booked a last-16 spot at World Cup 2018 as winners of Group B but their manager admits there are things to correct before they face Russia Spain boss Fernando Hierro admitted to concerns about his sides defending following the 2-2 draw with Morocco that sealed their place in the last 16. An injury-time equaliser from Iago Aspas snatched a point for the 2010 world champions and Irans late leveller against Portugal meant La Roja finished top of Group B despite winning only one of their three games. They twice fell behind in Kaliningrad with Khalid Boutaib capitalising on a defensive mix-up to open the scoring and Youssef En-Nesyri heading in from a corner after Isco had initially brought Spain level. Related Hierro is happy to have won the group but having watched his side concede three against Portugal in their first match he admitted that their defensive play is not the way forward. We said this would be a tough match he told a news conference. We knew full well Morocco would fight they have an excellent team they only lost their two games 1-0 when they deserved much more. The first conclusion I draw is that despite all these challenges we were on top so I need to look at the silver lining. Obviously there are things we need to improve and were going to be self-critical. Five goals in three matches is not the way forward and its what Ive told my players. Theyre professionals they understand the situation. Despite his demand for improvement Hierro refused to pin any individual blame on centre-backs Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos who looked vulnerable for much of the match. I assess the entire team not individuals he said. I keep those in-house. In a public forum I talk about how we can improve as a team as a whole. Hierro was only placed in charge on the eve of the tournament after Julen Lopetegui was sacked for negotiating a deal to take over at Real Madrid without the full knowledge of the Royal Spanish Football Association. Article continues below But the former Madrid defender has made it clear he is in complete command of the group and has not been reaching out to his predecessor for any advice. Julen has his job now I have mine I have my hands full he said. Were not texting each other. We each have our identity. Right now Im the person who is head coach. Yes we are friends we communicate as friends but we do not talk about football and tactics. Dont think that whenever I have to make a decision I call up Lopetegui and ask him!
